Seventh Grade

Seventh graders gain a global perspective through a study of World History, from the Age of Enlightenment to the present.

Father-and-son-studying-soil-and-environmentWhile immersed in subjects such as Far Eastern empires, the Industrial Revolution, and the Space Age, students will reflect and write about the people behind these events. Studying the literature of the time encourages a flexibility of thinking and perspective.

The Language Arts curriculum emphasizes composition skills and helps students express themselves clearly and creatively in writing. Students continue to develop their grammar skills through a detailed study of sentence structure and common writing pitfalls. Books from diverse viewpoints and time periods help students gain perspective on the art of writing and writing as social commentary.

In Earth Science, students study Earth and its natural processes, phenomena, and interactions between systems. Students apply what they learn and observe in hands-on lab investigations and activities related to astronomy, geology, meteorology, and environmental science. Emphasis is placed on learning about Earth’s natural resources and thinking creatively and critically through practical solutions to current environmental issues. Lab investigations (included in a separate lab manual) guide students in actively exploring concepts, building skills, and gaining experience in observation, data collection and analysis, and drawing conclusions supported by evidence. This course aligns with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

The Math curriculum, redesigned in 2017, builds on previous knowledge with new content designed to prepare students for pre-algebra or algebra in 8th grade. Mental math and regular skill review help students gain confidence and flexibility of thinking. Lesson topics include signed numbers, graphing inequalities, probability, third and fourth roots, measurements of circles and triangles, functions, ratios and proportions, scientific notation, and graphing a line on a coordinate plane. Students who are confident with math skills and ready for a new level of challenge may elect to take Pre-Algebra in 7th grade.
