Our Approach

As students approach adolescence, they experience a growing sense of independence. The Oak Meadow 6th grade curriculum supports this developmental stage by encouraging students to look inward while also exploring the outer world in greater depth. In sixth grade, subjects are separated into individual coursebooks while still taking an interdisciplinary approach.

Oak Meadow’s sixth grade social studies curriculum focuses on ancient world civilizations, and provides the foundation for an integrated experience that weaves together the history, geography, literature, government, and art of ancient cultures. In English, grammar lessons and activities are woven into writing assignments and students expand their vocabulary and composition skills. Sixth grade math provides a rigorous course of math skills and concepts, and in life science, students study plant cell division and reproduction, plant classification systems, invertebrates and vertebrates, animal life cycles, ecosystems, and the human body.

"I chose OM because it is very well rounded. I like how someone once said it’s a very out-of-the-box 'boxed curriculum'.”

“The choice of activities within each lesson has allowed the children to develop and expand their individual interests."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oak Meadow's curriculum secular or faith based?

Oak Meadow is one of the few providers of secular (non-religious) homeschooling curriculum on the market. Many families come to us because they are looking for an alternative to the many faith-based programs that are available. Families may choose to supplement our materials with additional lessons in order to incorporate spiritual education into their homeschooling day. Oak Meadow supports the freedom of parents to choose the best way to support their child’s religious and spiritual education.

How much time per day should homeschooling take?

This varies for each student and each family, but generally in sixth grade, you can expect to spend roughly one hour per subject per day.

Of course, some students will need more time to do their work well, and others may be quicker in certain subjects. Every student is different but this gives you a general idea of what to expect.

How do I know if sixth grade is the right grade level for my child?

Oak Meadow believes parents are in the best position to determine what grade level. We encourage parents to study our grade overviews and sample lessons to make an informed judgment based on their knowledge of their child.

Because we know that many students work at different grade levels in different subjects, Oak Meadow curriculum is designed to be easy to modify and adapt so you can customize your child’s education to serve their particular strengths, challenges, and needs.

Does the curriculum cover everything?
